Iowa State just found 577 yards, 45 points and five Aiden Flora touchdowns in one afternoon.
BYU just found 17 points, 216 yards and a six-minute closing drive in the rain.
Those games looked nothing alike, which is exactly why Friday is useful. No. 8 BYU hosts Iowa State at 8:15 p.m. Mountain on ESPN in LaVell Edwards Stadium. The broadcast question is settled. The football question is whether BYU can control Flora without turning its own injury-adjusted offense into a one-player Bear Bachmeier show.

BYU’s official event record gives the start as 2026-10-10 at 02:15 UTC. Utah remains on daylight time, so that converts to 8:15 p.m. Friday in Provo. Iowa State’s official preview independently lists 9:15 p.m. Central, ESPN and the same stadium.
ESPN access depends on the viewer’s television or streaming package. BYU has not published a separate free stream. Open the ESPN watch page before kickoff if you have not used that provider login recently.
The permanent game center is the safest place to return for the official event record and postgame links. A dedicated live-stats destination was not published in the sources checked for this guide, so we are not inventing one.
Flora changes the shape of every Iowa State snap
Aiden Flora’s line against West Virginia would look excessive even in a video game: 22 carries, 212 yards, three rushing touchdowns, two touchdown passes and 9.6 yards per carry. Iowa State’s offensive line earned the Big 12’s weekly unit honor after the Cyclones rushed for 265 yards.
The trick-play touchdowns will get replayed. The 22 carries are the larger problem.
Flora can punish a defense as the ordinary back, then become the passer after the defense starts chasing the run action. His 46-yard touchdown pass to Cody Jackson came from a lateral. His second went two yards to tight end Vince Benetti. Neither play works because Flora suddenly became a full-time quarterback. They work because his rushing threat makes defenders commit their eyes and bodies before the ball leaves his hand.
BYU cannot treat every Flora touch as a gadget alert. That would be a good way to lose the basic run fit. The front has to play the handoff honestly, while the second and third levels keep enough discipline to account for Jackson or Benetti leaking away from the action.
That assignment arrives without Isaiah Glasker. Tuesday’s Big 12 availability report listed Glasker out, along with LJ Martin and Sione Moa. Siale Esera returned to the depth chart after missing time, but one returning linebacker does not make Glasker’s communication and range reappear.
The first-quarter receipt should be simple: where are BYU’s safeties looking when Flora takes the ball? If they attack downhill before the play declares itself, Iowa State has earned the space for another pass. If they hesitate too long, Flora is averaging 8.1 yards per carry this season and does not need the trick.
BYU’s replacement run game has to become a group project
Martin left the TCU game after two carries for 16 yards. BYU still rushed for 141 yards and closed the 17-10 win with 10 consecutive runs for 72 yards, draining 5:55 before Bachmeier’s 21-yard touchdown.
That finish was tough. It should not become the whole offensive plan.
Bachmeier carried 15 times for 66 yards and both BYU touchdowns. Preston Rex received eight carries. Journee Tonga added a 14-yard gain during the closing drive. The Cougars proved they can divide work after Martin leaves, but they did not prove they can replace his weekly production without leaning heavily on their quarterback.
Our Martin and Glasker depth analysis separated the two absences for a reason. Martin’s carries can be distributed. His effect on the defense is harder to divide. A defense respects him before the snap, and that respect creates cleaner reads elsewhere.
Iowa State allowed West Virginia to rush for 291 yards. Quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. produced 149, while the Mountaineers finished with 518 total yards and 42 points. That result gives BYU a route, not a guarantee. Bachmeier can stress the same edges and interior fits, but repeated quarterback contact is a cost, especially one week before Notre Dame.
Rex and Tonga have to make ordinary running-back carries useful. Four yards on first down matters. A clean protection pickup matters. Forcing Iowa State to honor the back when Bachmeier reads the edge matters. BYU does not need one replacement to imitate Martin. It needs the whole room to keep the Cyclones from assigning the run game to No. 47 alone.
The passing game cannot hide behind Fort Worth weather
Bachmeier finished 11 of 24 for 62 yards at TCU. The rain was real, the false starts were costly and the late rushing touchdown won the game. None of that makes 62 passing yards a safe repeat.
Iowa State’s official comparison lists BYU at 179.8 passing yards per game and 235.5 rushing. The Cougars have converted 57.4 percent of their third downs, fourth nationally entering the game. Those numbers describe an offense that has stayed on schedule. TCU knocked it off schedule often enough that the defense and final drive had to rescue the night.
Friday calls for a middle answer. BYU should not force deep shots just to prove last week was weather. It also cannot let Iowa State crowd every first-down run while the passing menu shrinks to screens and emergency third-down throws.
Legend Glasker, Kyler Kasper, Walker Lyons and the tight ends can change the count with completions that arrive on time. A six-yard throw before pressure develops may be more valuable than another designed quarterback run. If Iowa State’s linebackers step hard toward Rex or Tonga, the space behind them should become part of the replacement plan.
The Cyclones have their own reason to protect the middle. Their availability report listed defensive end Caden Crawford and defensive tackle Ka’Mori Moore out, with linebacker Rylan Barnes questionable. BYU should use that information without pretending the front will be soft. Iowa State still has Sullivan Schlimgen averaging 9.2 tackles per game and a defense preparing for its third ranked opponent.
Cody Jackson makes the missed tackle expensive
Flora was not Iowa State’s only breakout against West Virginia. Cody Jackson caught six passes for 160 yards and a touchdown, including the 46-yard score from Flora. Jaylen Raynor completed 19 of 27 passes for 264 yards, while Jackson gave the offense a target who could turn one open window into a field-flipping play.
That threatens the same discipline BYU needs against Flora.
A safety who steps toward the run can leave Jackson behind him. A corner who expects the halfback pass can give away a short completion. A linebacker who widens too quickly can open the lane for Flora. Iowa State’s best answer is to make BYU defend all three choices at once.
BYU’s counter starts with pressure that does not wreck the coverage plan. The Cougars sacked TCU four times, their most since 2020, and Faletau Satuala’s 59-yard interception return created the first touchdown. Satuala now has 16 tackles, two tackles for loss and one of BYU’s six interceptions.
The TCU recap showed the defense winning without chasing a highlight on every snap. The rush kept working, Satuala capitalized when the fourth-down throw arrived and the secondary limited TCU to one touchdown. Iowa State asks for the same patience against more backfield misdirection.
The first 15 minutes should answer three questions
Watch these before the game becomes a scoreboard chase:
- Who carries for BYU besides Bachmeier? Rex and Tonga do not need a 40-yard run. They need enough first-down success to keep the quarterback from becoming the only credible rushing threat.
- Where does BYU place the extra defender against Flora? A safety arriving under control is different from a safety selling out before the exchange. Iowa State will test the distinction.
- Can BYU pass before third down? One or two efficient early-down completions would keep Iowa State from loading the run and make BYU’s strong third-down rate easier to sustain.
The setting adds another layer. It is BYU’s Homecoming game, a Friday night kickoff and the Cougars’ first home appearance since Sept. 12. Iowa State has not left its home state this season. The Cyclones’ last trip to Provo ended in a 45-13 win in 2023 after they took the ball away twice in the opening minutes.
BYU answered last season in Ames, rallying from a 24-10 deficit to win 41-27. The schools have met six times, and Iowa State leads the series 5-1. That history is useful mainly because it warns against a lazy start. Two early turnovers buried BYU in the last Provo meeting. A two-score hole would give Flora even more ways to control the game.
What comes next
Friday is not a bridge to Notre Dame. It is a conference game against a 3-2 team that just produced 577 yards and has beaten BYU in five of six meetings.
The Cougars are 4-0, 2-0 in the Big 12 and No. 8 in both major polls. Iowa State is 1-1 in league play under first-year coach Jimmy Rogers. A BYU win preserves the unbeaten start and gives the Cougars eight days before Notre Dame visits. An Iowa State win puts the Cyclones back into the conference race with a top-10 road result.
The verified fan plan is straightforward: Friday, Oct. 9 at 8:15 p.m. Mountain on ESPN, with radio through BYUradio and KSL NewsRadio. The football plan is less comfortable. BYU must replace Martin without exhausting Bachmeier, replace Glasker without losing its eyes and make Flora hand the ball back before he turns another ordinary run look into six points.
The football schedule carries the rest of the network assignments. The permanent BYU-Iowa State game center will keep the event on one URL as it moves from pregame to postgame.
