BYU men’s tennis sends Caden Hasler and Otto Schreiner to the Dar Walters Fall Classic in Boise from Friday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 27. The host has published daily competition windows, but no BYU-specific court time, television stream or radio broadcast.
The best way to follow is the official ITA tournament page. Its draws, schedule and results tabs are built for the tournament and should fill as assignments and scores are posted. BYU’s own event record still carries the authoritative time_tba marker, so its stored 16:00 UTC timestamp is not a hidden 10 a.m. Mountain first serve.
This event also needs one format correction before anybody starts counting team wins. Dar Walters uses mini-duals. Two players operate as a pair, playing one doubles match and two singles matches against another pair. Win two of the three courts and the pair advances. It looks enough like a dual to create pressure, but BYU is not playing one conventional team match against Boise State.

The ITA lists the competition as tournament 26-09506 with men’s singles and doubles events. Boise State says play will be split between its Appleton Tennis Center and Julia Davis Park. Fans driving to campus are directed to the West Albertsons Stadium lot, where the parking kiosks include a tennis option.
BYU has listed only Hasler and Schreiner for Boise. In a format made of two-player teams, that makes them the Cougars’ working unit unless the organizer publishes a different assignment. The draw had not posted a verified opening opponent when this guide was prepared. Check the ITA page rather than guessing from the host school’s name on BYU’s schedule.
Three courts decide every mini-dual
The format gives every point equal mathematical weight. The doubles result is one of three contests, not an opening point built from three doubles courts. Hasler and Schreiner then each get a singles assignment. A 2-1 decision advances the pair.
That creates three clean paths through a round:
- Win doubles and split singles.
- Lose doubles but win both singles courts.
- Sweep all three and spend less time rescuing the bracket.
The second path is the uncomfortable one. It asks both players to solve separate matches after the pair has already surrendered its shared court. The first path is the practical favorite for this BYU duo because Schreiner spent last spring at No. 1 doubles and Hasler played doubles in 19 of BYU’s 22 dual matches.
Still, fall tennis has a way of punishing tidy assumptions. Schreiner and Hasler were not a regular spring partnership. BYU’s player records list Schreiner with Adam Chodur on the top doubles court in all 22 dual matches, while Hasler most often partnered Hardy Owen. Boise is a partnership test before it is a title defense.
Caden Hasler already knows the comeback route
Hasler’s 2025 Dar Walters trip supplied a useful preview of this format. He and TJ Wells beat Boise State’s Carson Baker and Lukas Velik 2-1 in their opening mini-dual. The doubles court went to BYU 7-6(1), Wells lost his singles match, and Hasler recovered from a set down to beat Velik 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
That result matters more than a generic note that Hasler has played here before. He has already felt the mini-dual turn into a deciding singles court, dropped the opener and still closed the match. He also knows how thin the margin can get. Hasler and Wells lost an all-BYU semifinal to Adam Chodur and Redd Owen after Hasler pushed Owen to three sets and fell 6-4 in the third.
His full freshman season was steadier than one tournament. BYU credits Hasler with a 9-5 singles record, including 6-3 at No. 5 and 3-1 at No. 4. He finished third on the team in singles wins. His listed 6-9 spring doubles record was rougher, although his fall record was 10-7 before dual play began.
The weekend question is not whether Hasler can survive a long singles match. He has that receipt. Watch whether he can protect the doubles point with a new partner and keep his singles match from becoming another three-set repair job.
Otto Schreiner makes the doubles court the first test
Schreiner arrives with the more specialized recent role. He and Chodur played No. 1 doubles in all 22 spring duals, finishing 9-7. They also reached the NCAA doubles tournament after winning the ITA regional championship the previous fall. BYU lists Schreiner at 10-3 in fall doubles and 8-2 in fall singles during 2025-26.
Dar Walters was mixed for him last year. Schreiner and Hardy Owen swept their opening mini-dual against Montana State’s Eddie Biss and David Ismanescu. Schreiner won his singles match 7-6(5), 6-2. In the semifinal, the BYU pair lost doubles 6-4 to Idaho’s Paul Janson and Noe de Col. Owen won his singles court, but Schreiner could not hold a one-set lead, losing 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Idaho took the mini-dual 2-1.
That is almost a laboratory-perfect warning for this weekend. A pair can split the singles courts and still go home because the doubles result left no room. Schreiner’s job is to make his strongest discipline count first, then carry enough legs and patience into singles.
There is another small complication. Schreiner played only four spring singles matches, all at No. 5 or No. 6. His 8-2 fall singles mark shows he can handle the individual schedule, but the spring team chose him mainly for doubles. Dar Walters asks him to do both every round.
The bracket is regional, but it is not soft
Boise State lists nine schools: BYU, Boise State, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Portland, Utah State and Weber State. That is a useful Mountain and Northwest field rather than a decorative fall weekend.
The host is splitting its own roster too. Boise State lists four entrants: Eyad Ezzat, Izan Orgiles, Julius Seifert and Brayden Tallakson. Ezzat and Tallakson are scheduled for their collegiate debuts, while Orgiles is making his Boise State debut after transferring from North Alabama. Seifert supplies the returning experience.
BYU will not necessarily draw a Boise State pair. The bracket can send Hasler and Schreiner toward any listed school, and last year’s all-Cougar semifinal shows that same-team meetings are possible once the draw advances. Read the opponent on the ITA bracket, not the Boise State logo attached to BYU’s schedule row.
The host says BYU is pursuing a second straight Dar Walters title because Alex Edmonston and Tygen Goldammer beat Chodur and Redd Owen in last year’s all-Cougar final. That crown says something about BYU’s 2025 depth. It does not transfer automatically to Hasler and Schreiner. Neither was part of the winning pair, and both had a semifinal loss with a different partner.
How to follow without inventing a stream
Start with the ITA tournament page. Use the draws tab for the pair’s bracket, the schedule tab for court timing and the completed section for full scores. Search both Hasler and Schreiner because a mini-dual result can be posted as three separate courts rather than one familiar BYU team line.
A simple tracking order works:
- Record the doubles score and opponent pair.
- Record each singles opponent and full set score.
- Count the mini-dual only after two of the three contests are final.
- Treat an empty bracket slot as unposted, not canceled.
- Check BYU Athletics for a daily or weekend recap before declaring the event complete.
No official source currently promises video, and neither school has published radio coverage. Generic streaming pages will not fix that. The ITA result path is the honest follow option until the host adds something else.
What would count as a good Boise weekend?
The cleanest answer is not “repeat as champion.” Hasler and Schreiner have never been listed as BYU’s regular pair, so the first standard is whether their doubles court gives them a workable start. A win there means either player can advance the pair by taking one singles match. A loss demands two independent recoveries.
Hasler’s standard is closure. Last year’s Boise results included a comeback win and a 6-4 third-set loss. He has shown he can absorb a bad set. Turning that resilience into shorter matches would be progress.
Schreiner’s standard is role transfer. His top-court doubles experience should settle the pair, but Dar Walters will also expose how ready he is for repeated singles work after a spring spent mostly in doubles. One strong doubles set cannot cover a loose singles finish because both count the same.
The useful weekend would leave BYU with an actual partnership option, not only two individual records. Zack Warren already knows what Schreiner can do beside Chodur and what Hasler can do beside Hardy Owen or TJ Wells. Boise tests whether those separate experiences fit together.
The next confirmed checkpoint is the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Provo from Oct. 6-10. That event will bring a larger draw and postseason stakes. Dar Walters gives Hasler and Schreiner three days to learn whether the doubles point can become their head start rather than their weekly emergency.
